How the laser happened
This is the title of a book by Nobel laureate Charles Townes, who discusses the invention of the laser. Considering the tremendous and continually expanding influence of laser technology, I will highlight the most significant historical and contemporary developments, tracing their origins. Lasers are now extremely versatile, though still evolving, tools in classical instrumentation, manufacturing, and emerging quantum technologies. The 21st century will technologically be the century of the laser.
